Sources

Almost every mention of Doctor Who in anything ever, pretty much, with support from anatomical textbooks, online medical databases, and multiple learning resources.

The Evidence Hierarchy

Because of the social and cultural juggernaut that is Doctor Who, there are many conflicts of information. This is where the evidence hierarchy comes into play.

First and foremost, conflicting information was harmonised, but if that wasn’t possible, the highest on the hierarchy took precedence and deleted the one below.

Source List

All possible sources were independently reviewed and analysed by the author for their validity, and quality of interpretation from secondary sources. Some sources were unavailable to the author and noted accordingly. View the entire Doctor Who source list here (frequently updated).

If there was conflict between Classic material and New material then it was sorted on a case-by-case basis.Spin-offs and extended broadcast mediaFull spin-off series aired on the BBCTorchwood, SJA, Class etc.BBC-produced minisodesNight of the Doctor etc.BBC-produced animations/cartoonsDreamland, The Infinite Quest etc.BBC-produced trailersBBC-produced charity broadcastsTime Crash, Born Again etc. Yes, Music of the Spheres, tooThis excludes:Dimensions in Time (I mean ... come on)Any broadcast clearly not attempting to be ‘canonical’ eg. Curse of the Fatal DeathRationale: Almost everything produced by the BBC linked to Doctor Who that’s at least attempting to be canonical was taken as part of the ‘Whoniverse’.BBC books/audioBBC-produced main book ranges and audiosBBC-produced comicsI know the definition is a bit sticky but for simplicity’s sake, this include DWM and DWA comics from magazine inceptionAnything from Time Lord VictoriousIncluding this for clarity - this means all the biological-related content from TLV. Rationale: Anything by the Beeb took precedence over everything else.Big FinishMain rangesCrossoversSpin-offsThis includes: Alternate universe stories like Doctor Who Unbound and Death Comes to TimeRationale: Ever since the Moff canonised Big Finish in Night of the Doctor, there’s no denying it’s now a very big deal in the canon of Who (wooo!). OtherBBC-licensed books and audiosVirgin New Adventures etc.BBC-licensed comicsThe IDW and Titan ranges etc.Other BBC-licensed thingsBoard games and the like.Anything deleted from aboveAttack of the Graske, Dimensions in Time etc.Rationale:  Being licensed by the BBC doesn’t mean it’s of any quality for its information (VNA range, I’m looking at you).Secret level: Proximal sourcesProduction team commentsEg. That-Thing-Moffat-Said-Once-In-The-Radiotimes-Where-We-Thought-He-Might-Be-Serious and That-Thing-John-Nathan-Turner-Didn’t-Get-Around-To-Doing-Thank-GodEverything elseBasically, anything coming from anywhere else that seems relevant, but more unreliable than a 1970’s K9 motor. This includes things like Faction Paradox and Cyberon, for example.Fan theoryRationale: You can tell the fact this is a secret level that these are sources I’m literally too embarrassed to mention exist, but they do. This is an ‘if all else fails’ level.
